rom the time Mazola McKerson was very young, she recognized the importance of a good education. She strove to educate herself and later wanted a college education for her four children.
In 1942, a local lady asked her to cook a special Sunday dinner and at the end of the scrumptious meal, suggested she start a catering business. At the time, Mazola didn't know what the word "catering² meant and asked the lady to explain. After their conversation, the woman offered to run a 30-day ad in the newspaper for Mazola in order to help her get a business started. After the 30 days lapsed, Mazola had more business than she could handle from her own family kitchen.

Needing larger facilities, in 1962, she bought 1606 McLish to start a restaurant in addition to operating her catering services. Due to the business's success, she was able to expand the restaurant in 1975.
Mazola's love for politics and history lured her into running for the City Commission in 1975. She served two terms on the commission and became the first black, female mayor in our city's history. She helped initiate and implement the 8 in the 80's project which improved city facilities.

"The citizens of this town used our catering service and patronized our restaurant allowing us to finance the education of our four children. I believe in Ardmore because it has wonderful people, good churches, educational facilities, etc. These good people seek out good things and make them happen!", said Mazola McKerson.
